The fighting in Ukraine started because our former President, Viktor Yanukovych, didn't want to join the European Union (EU). This upset the people so they went to the Maidan - the central square in Kiev. The authorities tried to control the protestors to get them to leave but their attempt was unsuccessful because people began to die. After the protestors died, the Ukrainian people became even more angry with the authorities, demanding the impeachment of Mr. Yanukovych. Almost all of the South of Ukraine came to war with Russia.
Most recently, the Russian troops were on the territory of the South (Crimea). I live just a little further down South so it has been very scary to walk through the streets. On Saturdays, the local people clean the main streets of the city. Right now, everything is quiet in Kiev. The news and people say everything is okay and there's no need for alarm but the anxiety doesn't go away. I hope that Ukraine will rise against this and be able to be at peace again.
Pray for Ukraine.
